Nigel has a done a fantastic job at creating an informative, practical and engaging guide to law job hunting. I appreciate the knowing tone of law student attitudes and tendencies, and am impressed at his level of insight into this. Particularly, that we often have no idea what we want in a law firm beyond a shiny office space within a certain postcode. His steps for addressing this were practical and applicable. I also appreciate the way in which he has catered for a range of aspirations and career goals within the legal profession. There is something to be taken away from this whether the goal is international, mid tier, boutique or even social justice oriented practice. His insights into the employment realities behind these varying kinds of firms are invaluable for law students for who are vulnerable to the homogenous marketing material thrown at us.
I also gained particular benefit from very specific concepts, situations and questions pertinent to the recruitment process. My vocabulary has expanded to include ‘USP’, ‘modifiers’ and ‘black letter law’. Breaking down the art of smiling during interviews as well as that of finding an appropriate centre of power at a cocktail party, is as fantastically useful as it socially confronting! That Nigel delves into these areas which such detail and almost cynical insight is incredibly useful. Capped off with an astute interview question translation guide that informs us of the real goals behind typical interview questions, I could not recommend this series more highly for a law student delving into applications and recruitment.
