Nigel has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in law. He has been a Partner of three significant firms over 25 years; a small, medium, and very large firm. He retired from practice due to ill health.
He was appointed as a Partner of Maule James Preston in 1985. He practised tax and commercial structuring for accountants and their clients and did work for a large financial institution.
In 1994, he joined the long-established firm Ebsworth & Ebsworth (now HWL Ebsworth) as a Partner. His work was predominantly commercial law, including a tax component. In addition, he continued to do work for the Victorian Branch of the AMA.
In 1997, Nigel joined the firm DLA Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper) as a consultant and then as a Partner. He continued his commercial practice while adding some major health clients. Amongst his clients were many public hospitals (Alfred Health, Austin Health, Melbourne Health etc.), The Victorian Healthcare Association and State and Federal Governments. Nigel ceased practice in 2010.
After a long convalescence, Nigel began to write and coach law students on how to get a job with a law firm. He was a co-founder of OILS, a private body that supports the careers of Ivanhoe Grammar Alumni in the field of law.
In 2019, he completed the first stage of a podcast series for younger members of OILS. In 2020, he started working for the Law Institute of Victoria as a contractor interviewing notable practitioners for a podcast series. That work is a continuing project.
